As we enter February, many people who have command start have been thanking the lucky stars that they had it installed. The ability to start your car from the comfort of your home or office and let it heat up before you have to get in it is absolutely fantastic. Most command start systems have a 15-minute (or so) timer, so that your car won’t run out of gas. I know that some of my co-workers like to treat these 15 minutes as the full warm-up time. They turn on their command start at 5:45, and at 6:00 when it’s finished its cycle, they pack up their things, put their coats on, and leave for home.

Get command start installed on your vehicle at McPhillips Toyota in WinnipegThe thing is, your vehicle doesn’t need 15 minutes to warm up. In fact, depending on whom you ask, most of the time 3-5 minutes is sufficient from your car’s perspective, even on the coldest Winnipeg winter days! It’s true that after this short time, your seat warmers might not be toasty yet and the air blowing might be a little cold, and no, your defroster hasn’t removed all of the ice on your windshield yet. That’s what your ice scraper and snow brush are for though! Letting your car sit for 15 minutes burning fuel is unnecessary! It isn’t harmful though, so don’t worry.

Hopefully your command start won’t be needed for much longer, but you can save yourself some fuel by cutting down your pre-start time.
